SLB has been selected to deliver a suite of carbon storage technologies and services for a major UK carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative led by the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), a joint venture between bp, Equinor, and TotalEnergies.

The project, focused on supporting the East Coast Cluster, aims to build the infrastructure necessary to collect CO2 emissions from industrial hubs in Teesside and the Humber and transport them to permanent storage sites beneath the North Sea.

As part of its role, SLB will use its Sequestri™ suite of carbon storage technologies, specifically designed for CCS applications, to develop six dedicated carbon storage wells.

The contract covers a range of services including drilling, well construction, formation evaluation, fluid systems, well cementing, completions, and wireline operations.

NEP’s infrastructure will enable the long-term storage of captured carbon dioxide in the Endurance saline aquifer and nearby geological formations.

With an estimated capacity of up to 1 billion metric tons of CO2, the site represents a cornerstone of the UK’s efforts to decarbonise heavy industry. Initially, the system is expected to handle and store around 4 million metric tons of CO2 per year, with operations slated to begin in 2028.

The development is seen as critical to advancing the UK’s net zero ambitions, particularly in its most emission-intensive regions.

“Technologies and services tailored for carbon storage will play a critical role in shifting the economics and safeguarding the integrity of carbon storage projects before and after the FID,” said Katherine Rojas, senior vice president of Industrial Decarbonization, SLB.

“We are excited to be a part of this groundbreaking CCS project in the UK, leveraging the proven carbon storage technologies in our Sequestri portfolio and our extensive expertise delivering complex CCS projects around the world.”
