Energy technology company SLB has been selected as the strategic reservoir partner for the Havstjerne carbon storage project in the Norwegian North Sea, leading concept and front-end engineering and design (FEED) services ahead of a final investment decision.

Operated by Harbour Energy in consortium with Stella Maris CCS (a Yinson Production company), Havstjerne is a large-scale offshore carbon storage initiative designed to receive and permanently store CO2 emissions from industrial facilities across Europe.

SLB will lead an integrated engineering scope that connects subsurface reservoir analysis with injection well design, subsea infrastructure, and long-term CO2 monitoring plans.

The work will be delivered through close collaboration between SLB and its OneSubsea joint venture.

While SLB manages subsurface maturation and well design, SLB OneSubsea will deliver the FEED scope for the subsea injection system, including the template manifold, all-electric trees, control systems, and distribution umbilicals.

EU Funding And Successful Appraisal Well Set Stage For Final Investment Decision

The project advances following a successful 2025 appraisal well that confirmed high-quality reservoir characteristics suitable for large-scale CO2 injection.

Additionally, the development secured 225 million euros (~$226.5 million) from the EU Innovation Fund in 2025 to support a low-pressure floating storage and injection concept designed to lower capital expenditures and enhance operational flexibility.

Gavin Rennick, president of SLB’s New Energy and Industrial business, highlighted that the integrated approach reduces contractual interfaces between subsurface and subsea engineering teams.

“Havstjerne demonstrates how SLB can bring together its technology, engineering and project integration capabilities to help customers develop the technical basis needed to advance large-scale carbon storage projects,” Rennick stated.

By consolidating early-stage design work under a single engineering framework, the consortium aims to optimize the technical, cost, and schedule parameters required to reach a final investment decision.
