Netherlands-based direct air capture (DAC) trailblazer Skytree has successfully validated its novel technology that enables on-site carbon dioxide capture and liquefaction, generating pure CO2 that can be used in beverage production.
The company validated this innovative concept through the Skytree Stratus Alpha prototype launched at its Almere facility in the Netherlands, where it managed to produce transportable, ready-to-use liquid CO2 with a purity percentage that surpassed the beverage industry’s standard.
Namely, in order for CO2 to be considered “beverage-grade,” global standards like the ones outlined by the Society of Beverage Technologists (ISBT) require a minimum purity of 99.9%.
Skytree’s Stratus Alpha prototype was able to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere with a gas purity of approximately 98%. Once the system converted the captured gas into liquid form, the CO2 purity levels increased to 99.98%.
This tech breakthrough, proven through thousands of hours of performance, paves the way for the commercial deployment of the Skytree Stratus units, slated to begin in 2026.
Skytree has highlighted that the data and observations gathered during its prototype operations will be used to further enhance the system before its commercial market debut.
By being able to deliver pure liquefied CO2 captured from the atmosphere, Skytree is offering a significant on-site supply optimization for many producers that require carbon dioxide in their production lines.
This solution cuts the conventionally complex supply logistics, enabling easy storage and transport, and unifies in one location the carbon capture process with the utilization or storage one.

The Stratus units are refined to operate even in off-peak hours when power is cheaper, making them an extremely suitable match for greenhouses, as the system unlocks energy savings while storing the liquified CO2 for later use.
In a statement, Skytree CTO Wojciech Glazek expressed pride over his team delivering an economically viable DAC tech that unites energy efficiency, weather-independent productivity, high initial CO2 purity, and integrated CO2 liquefaction in one product.
He added, “Our system’s high initial CO₂ purity makes liquefaction simpler and more efficient, avoiding the 15%+ CO₂ losses other systems can face. Crucially, our productivity is stable year-round, eliminating the seasonal swings of ±20% that undermine the ROI of traditional DAC assets.”
