Global financial data and market infrastructure provider SIX has teamed up with CO2 removal digital infrastructure innovator Carbonfuture in a long-term agreement for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) supplied by various CO2 removal initiatives.

This multi-year deal will provide support to different CDR pathways, including Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) and Biochar Carbon Removal (BCR).

One of the chosen projects is Kenya-based Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) developer Octavia Carbon, a company pioneering this technology in the Global South.

For its CDR operations, Octavia Carbon has partnered with Carbonfuture, utilizing their world’s first independent dMRV system for DAC called Carbonfuture MRV+.

This cutting-edge system enables real-time data tracking across the entire carbon removal process, providing transparency and reassurance that the CO2 credits issued by Octavia Carbon are high integrity.

By partnering on a long-term CDR agreement, SIX and Carbonfuture are demonstrating how corporate carbon removal investments can be done in a gradual manner.

This kind of investment, calculated and spread out over time, enables companies to build expertise and secure supply early in the process, while also making it easier to scale the commitment in the future, offering cost predictability and supply stability as the market evolves.

Bjørn Sibbern, CEO of SIX, commented, “Purchasing certified carbon removal credits is a strategic move to actively support the development of carbon markets. This is the next logical step following our investment in Carbonfuture and SIX’s entry into the carbon removal market.”

Carbonfuture CEO Hannes Junginger-Gestrich, stated, “SIX is taking a forward-thinking approach by securing early access to high-quality carbon removal while maintaining the flexibility to scale over time.”

“At Carbonfuture, we have curated a portfolio that not only meets SIX’s climate needs but also strengthens the broader carbon removal ecosystem by supporting the scaling of multiple carbon removal technologies.”
