Sequestra Secures $1.1M For CO2 Utilisation In Heavy Industry - Carbon Herald

sequestra, a Vienna-based startup focused on data-driven methods for permanently utilizing CO2 within heavy industry, has secured €1.1 million (~$1.14 million) in pre-seed funding.

This investment will fuel the advancement of their patent-protected technology, which assesses and implements the potential of residual materials for capturing CO2 on an industrial scale.

The funding round attracted support from several investors, including Carbon Drawdown Initiative, specializing in large-scale, long-term CO2 reduction technologies, along with VSE Beteiligungs-GmbH and Climate Founders.

Founded in 2024 by Lukas Höber, Roberto Lerche, and Gero Schwarz, sequestra‘s six-person team combines expertise in technological research, industrial plant engineering, and business consulting. They are currently developing hardware and software at their Vienna and Attnang-Puchheim, Austria locations.

sequestra’s innovative platform facilitates the permanent sequestration of CO2 within industrial byproducts like steel slag, incineration ash, and demolition debris, transforming these carbonated materials for use in construction.

By integrating an analytical facility, an empirical data model, and industrial processing technologies, sequestra delivers customized solutions for the sector.

This approach presents a sustainable alternative to traditional waste disposal methods and contributes to lowering CO2 emissions, directly tackling critical challenges faced by heavy industry.

sequestra estimates its technology’s potential impact at 4 to 8.5 billion tons of CO2 reduction annually, representing 10–20% of global emissions.

The startup has gained recognition through participation in several accelerator programs, including INiTS, the Vienna Business Agency’s Startup Grant, EIT Climate KIC Climate Launchpad, and EIT Manufacturing Venture Builders.

At the heart of their work is a globally patented, data-driven process for CO2 absorption by mineral residues.

A key development milestone is a rapid-testing facility for automated parameter analysis of small material samples, with the first version expected by the end of 2025.

The team is also focused on scaling up its technology for future industrial applications.  Recognizing the importance of market viability, sequestra is establishing a dedicated role to ensure the commercial success of these CO2-binding materials within the construction industry.

This funding injection enables sequestra to progress toward industrial implementation, ultimately striving for a climate-neutral heavy industry.
