The Danish carbon capture and storage (CCS) tender process has taken a new turn, with the identity of a previously undisclosed bidder now confirmed.

The Danish Energy Agency has revealed to freelance journalist Hanno Böck that the two bidders in the latest round are Aalborg Portland A/S and Gaia Carbon Capture. The latter had until now remained unnamed, despite widespread speculation.

The confirmation follows a freedom of information request, which clarified the final participants in the tender.

Denmark is currently running a competitive process to support the development of CCS projects.

However, the latest round saw nine out of ten preselected projects withdraw, leaving only Aalborg Portland publicly committed at the time.

Thus, the presence of a second bidder came as a surprise when the agency announced earlier this year that two offers had been submitted.

One of the bidders had initially indicated it would drop out before reconsidering its position.

Gaia Carbon Capture is a collaboration between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Vestforbrænding. The project aims to implement carbon capture at a waste incineration facility in Copenhagen.

Recent changes within the company structure suggest a potential shift in how risks are distributed between the partners.

The development adds a new layer of complexity to Denmark’s CCS ambitions, as the country continues efforts to scale carbon capture technologies.
