A collaborative research effort into carbon dioxide sequestration aboard floating production, storage, and offloading vessels (FPSOs) has commenced, as SBM Offshore revealed its agreement with PETROBRAS for a detailed study.

This analysis will explore the implementation of specialized carbon capture units on these offshore platforms.

The blueprint for these modules originates from a prior successful collaboration in engineering and design between SBM Offshore and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI).

DNV has validated the design, which merges MHI’s patented CO2 capture methodologies with SBM Offshore’s renowned Fast4ward® principles.

This streamlined, modular approach promises to substantially decrease the total emissions generated during oil and gas extraction from FPSOs. The innovative solution is a central component of SBM Offshore’s emissionZERO® initiative.

The study’s parameters encompass the conceptual design and economic assessment of diverse carbon capture system configurations, intended for integration into future FPSOs deployed within PETROBRAS‘ operational fields.

Olivier Icyk, Chief Business Officer at SBM Offshore, stated: “The signature of this study demonstrates the trust that Petrobras has in SBM Offshore as an ocean infrastructure pioneer.”

“We continue to work towards decarbonization solutions in the design of our products and in our offshore operations. Through this study, we will be able to advance the carbon capture module design jointly with our partner MHI for CO2 reduction on future FPSOs.”
