Saudi Aramco has contracted Larsen & Toubro, specifically its LTEH arm, for a $1.5 billion project centered on carbon capture and storage (CCS).
The agreement tasks Larsen & Toubro with delivering comprehensive EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) services for the inaugural phase of Saudi Aramco ’s CCS hub, a critical component of the company’s ACCS (Accelerated Carbon Capture & Sequestration) initiative.
The planned facility, operational by 2027, will capture CO2 from various industrial streams, including Aramco’s gas plants, and sequester it in a saline aquifer.
This effort directly supports Saudi Arabia‘s 2060 net-zero ambition and the interim target of 44 million tons of CO2 sequestration by 2035.
In pursuit of its 2060 net-zero emissions objective, as set forth in the Saudi Green Initiative, Saudi Arabia is employing carbon capture and storage as a crucial tool.
The Aramco CCS hub, strategically located in Jubail, Eastern province, is designed to play a significant role. With a planned operational date of 2027 for its initial phase, the hub intends to capture and sequester 9 million metric tons of CO2 each year.

This will be achieved by tapping into high-purity CO2 streams from both Aramco’s gas plants, contributing roughly 6 million tons, and other industrial sources, providing the remaining 3 million.
The captured CO2 stream will then be prepared for storage through dehydration and compression before being safely sequestered within an onshore saline aquifer.
The hub, a joint venture involving Aramco, Linde, and SLB, will not only reduce carbon emissions but also foster economic diversification and open avenues for blue hydrogen and ammonia production, aligning with Aramco’s 2050 goal of achieving net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
