Alfa Laval has been selected by EPC contractor Saipem to supply specialized heat transfer equipment for Stockholm Exergi’s Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) project, one of the largest bioenergy carbon capture initiatives in Europe.

Scheduled to begin operations in 2028, the facility will capture, liquefy, and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 annually at Stockholm Exergi’s biomass-based combined heat and power plant. Once fully operational, the project will represent roughly 1% to 2% of total global carbon capture capacity.

Alfa Laval will supply its specialized Ziepack gas-gas interchangers alongside a suite of process plate-and-frame heat exchangers. The thermal units will serve as critical components within the core capture process, designed to maximize system energy recovery and overall facility efficiency.

Reclaiming Thermal Energy for District Heating

Capturing and liquefying CO2 from biomass flue gas requires significant energy inputs. By integrating high-efficiency heat exchangers into the plant’s architecture, the facility will reclaim waste thermal energy and feed it directly into Stockholm’s existing district heating network.

“Carbon capture at this scale is one of the most demanding thermal engineering challenges in the energy transition, and effective energy recovery is what ultimately makes it commercially viable,” said Thomas Møller, President of the Energy Division at Alfa Laval.

The heat recovery design allows the plant to reduce operational penalties while supporting Sweden’s national climate targets and the EU’s broader net-zero strategy.

“The plant will require a lot of energy to capture the CO2 from the flue gas and liquify it, but with the high quality Ziepack heat exchangers from Alfa Laval, we will be able to reclaim the energy used,” added Egil Nybakk, Director of BECCS at Stockholm Exergi.

“This energy will go back into our existing district heating system, which contributes additionally to our carbon removal targets.”
