Rubicon Carbon has signed an offtake agreement with Kenya-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) company Bio-Logical.
Under the agreement, Bio-Logical will deliver carbon credits through its first operating biochar facility launched near Mt. Kenya back in 2023.
As a carbon removal supplier headquartered in Kenya, Bio-Logical is working on projects across Africa with the goal of removing 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually and supporting 1 million farmers each year by 2030.
To make this vision a reality, the company uses agricultural waste biomass as feedstock to produce carbon-dense biochar, which is then applied in the production process of soil-revitalizing fertilizer.
Not only does this process help tackle atmospheric CO2 emissions, but it also improves the local environment and ecosystems, boosting soil health and enhancing the resilience to droughts.
Through partnerships with local farmers, Bio-Logical distributes its biochar-based fertilizer product to agricultural communities, helping them increase the crop yield from their farms.
These activities are what enables Bio-Logical to generate high-quality carbon removal credits that are issued as Carbon Removal Certificates (CORCs) under Puro.earth’s biochar methodology.
As part of the deal signed with Rubicon Carbon, Bio-Logical is expected to start delivering carbon credits in 2026.
To deliver the credits, Bio-Logical will leverage its expanded fertilizer production capacity at the Mt. Kenya site, which added an extra five acres to its original size, allowing the company to support fivefold more smallholder farmers on the ground.
In a recent publication, Rubicon Carbon expressed pride in bringing Bio-Logical’s high-quality carbon credits to its customers while supporting the Kenyan company’s impactful growth across Africa.
