Science-based carbon management company Carbon Direct has welcomed Rory Jacobson back to its team, appointing him as Head of Policy.
Jacobson will take the new role at Carbon Direct after serving as division director at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM).
Before his DOE position, Rory Jacobson was a Deputy Director of Policy at Carbon180, where his work centered around managing the federal policy portfolio for engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathways.
From 2019 to 2022, he served as a science advisor at Carbon Direct, where he performed due diligence on CDR projects and provided expertise and guidance on policy.
With in-depth knowledge of carbon policy implementation and a successful track record of launching trailblazing federal initiatives, Jacobson now returns to Carbon Direct, where he will apply his expertise towards navigating further high-integrity climate action.
Commenting on this new chapter, Jacobson stated, “Coming back to Carbon Direct feels like coming home.”
He adds, “During my time in government, I gained firsthand insight into the challenges of implementing carbon management policy at scale. I’m eager to apply these lessons to help organizations develop climate strategies that are not just compliant but truly impactful.”
A Master of Environmental Management from Yale with dual degrees from UC Berkeley, Rory Jacobson boasts a work background that includes research positions with the Natural Resources Defense Council and World Resources Institute.

During his time at the DOE, he led several prominent projects, including the $1.2 billion Regional Direct Air Capture Hubs Program and the first federal initiative for purchasing carbon removal credits.
These efforts helped establish a quality standard for carbon credits, along with measurement frameworks that enhance the CDR market integrity.
