High-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) developer Residual has entered into a biochar-centered partnership with ICROA-endorsed carbon credit registry and standard Rainbow.
Residual and Rainbow are joining forces to deliver premium quality biochar credits to a market with high demand for this decarbonization pathway.
Under the collaboration, Residual, as a seasoned developer of high-quality CDR projects, will help get biochar initiatives off the ground.
Specifically, the company will focus on supporting industrial and agricultural partners to turn waste biomass into high-integrity carbon removal projects.
The partnership with Rainbow will ensure that the projects developed by Residual are built from the ground up for quality, scale, and rigorous documentation, boosting confidence in buyers and increasing the trust in the project outcomes.
Rainbow, on the other hand, will enable the projects to reach the voluntary carbon market, driving the registration and credit issuance.
This collaboration comes at a time of peak market interest in biochar, which has topped the charts as the engineered CDR pathway with the most delivered tonnes so far.
A report published by CDR.fyi showed nearly 15 million tonnes of biochar CO2 removal contracted by May 2025, while a backtrack analysis showed that since the start of 2022, biochar contract volumes have surpassed 3 million tonnes.

As industry stakeholders keep pointing out that the demand for biochar currently surpasses the volumes that developers can actually deliver, the partnership between Residual and Rainbow will contribute towards the resolution of this issue, providing buyers with a vetted biochar supply.
Residual co-founder Dr. Laura Fritsch commented:
“High-integrity removals require more than good intentions—they require rigorous project design, credible data, and clear risk allocation. By working with Rainbow, we can ensure that projects are structured in a way that delivers durable climate benefits while also scaling efficiently.”

On behalf of Rainbow, co-founder Grégoire Guirauden stated:
“Rainbow’s mission is to issue science-backed carbon credits that align with corporates’ value chains, strategies, and climate commitments. Residual’s focus on developing large-scale carbon removal projects, together with industrial partners, fits perfectly with our vision. We are excited to build on this partnership to accelerate the growth of the carbon removal market.”
