Climate tech startup Releaf Earth announced that it has successfully issued the first batch of carbon removal credits for Salesforce in a transaction enabled by the Milkywire platform.

The credits, issued via the Rainbow protocol, mark a pioneering industrial-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) issuance in Nigeria.

This first portion of credits represents 190 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) generated via Releaf Earth’s cutting-edge biochar production facility in Iwury, Cross River State in Nigeria, which uses agricultural waste as feedstock for its operations.

Back in 2025, Releaf Earth was one of 15 startups chosen by Milkywire for a CDR purchase agreement through the Climate Transformation Fund (CTF).

Back then, Releaf Earth and its potential for high-quality CDR deliveries was part of the group of companies that stood out in a large pool of 280 applicants who answered Milkywire’s call for proposals.

Not even a year later, the company has justified Milkywire’s trust, issuing this first portion of biochar-based, credible carbon removal.

Through its biochar operations in Nigeria, Releaf Earth also works on delivering social and environmental benefits that extend beyond carbon removal, guided by a “Circular Wealth Engine” concept focused on the wellbeing of both people and the planet.

When Releaf Earth’s biochar product is applied to soils, farmers can reach up to a 23% increase in crop yields, unlocking a valuable alternative to synthetic fertilizers, which are increasingly expensive in this global region.

By combining biochar usage with the new revenue streams created from the monetization of a waste material like agricultural residues, Releaf Earth is well on its way to increase the incomes for smallholder farmers in this area by over 50%.

In a recent publication, Releaf Earth commented on the milestone delivery by saying:

“This delivery proves that tech-driven supply chains in Africa can do more than move goods. They can deliver massive economic value alongside verifiable climate impact.”

“To the team at Milkywire, Rainbow, and our technical partners at Biochar Industrial Group: Thank you for being part of this journey. This is a win for our farmers, a win for our partners, and a win for the planet.”
