The Silva Carbon Origination Fund has made headlines with its recent launch and initial fund closing, attracting significant investment from notable industry players. Mining giants Rio Tinto and BHP, alongside the well-known airline Qantas, have stepped forward as cornerstone investors, collectively committing A$80 million (USD$53 million) to this innovative initiative.

Silva Capital is a partnership formed by investment firms Roc Partners and C6 Investment Management, dedicated to the creation of carbon reduction projects with a high level of integrity, aimed at producing Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

The Silva Carbon Origination Fund represents the joint venture’s inaugural fund, which will focus on developing a variety of agricultural and planting projects across Australia with the goal of generating large quantities of high-quality ACCUs.

With this financial support, the initiative is beginning on a promising note, and ultimately, the fund seeks to gather 250 million Australian dollars, which will be channeled into various projects that align with its objectives.

The fund is designed to provide access to large-scale, high integrity carbon credits sourced from nature-based projects in Australia. Its main intention is to combat climate change through projects that promote reforestation and green agricultural practices.

This collaboration underscores the growing recognition of the importance of nature-based solutions in combating the global ecological crisis and enhancing environmental sustainability.

According to Brad Mytton, Co-Managing Director of Silva Capital, sustainable farming is central to the company’s investment approach. Through the Silva Carbon Origination Fund, they seek to develop a diverse portfolio of agricultural land that features substantial canopy coverage, producing a significant amount of high-quality carbon credits.

He commented, “The Fund has been designed to appeal to both corporate investors seeking to access carbon credits and institutional investors seeking portfolio diversification, ensuring that we can maximize the volume of capital invested into the sector, capital which is needed to enable Australia to meet its decarbonization targets.”
