Puro.Earth Updated Its Geologically Stored Carbon Methodology

Puro.Earth Updated Its Geologically Stored Carbon Methodology - Carbon Herald

Puro.Earth – a leading crediting platform for engineered carbon removal, announced it has revised and updated its Puro Standard Geologically Stored Carbon (GSC) Methodology – the methodology containing the requirements to issue carbon credits verified by Puro also known as CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs), from direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) and bio-CCS, including bio energy carbon capture and storage (BECCS) removal activities.

The updated methodology follows a public consultation and is aligned with the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) Core Carbon Principles and the latest scientific research. It represents the latest offering from the durable carbon removal standard to the carbon markets.

According to the announcement, the 2024 edition includes major changes in project eligibility, in the requirements for the storage reservoirs, biomass sourcing criteria, carbon accounting, data collection and monitoring requirements. More about the changes applied can be found here

“Geological storage of carbon is expected to play a significant role in combating climate change. The Puro Standard is committed to developing rigorous methodologies to enhance the integrity of the carbon markets, boosting confidence among credit buyers and incentivizing capital investments in necessary infrastructure,” commented Marianne Tikkanen, Head of Standard at Puro.earth.

The updated methodology also aims to increase integrity and reliability of the carbon removal activities from these methods in order to accelerate investments to carbon markets and operationalization. Climeworks is the first company in the direct air capture industry to achieve third-party certification under the Puro Standard back in May 2024. Climeworks’ DAC technology and Carbfix’s CO2 mineralization process had to go through the meticulous audit of the Puro Standard certification process.
