Puro.earth has launched a public consultation for the updated version of its biochar methodology, looking to gather feedback and input in the period between April 3 – 24 2025.

The public consultation also intends to collect opinions on two more documents, one of which is an updated Biomass Sourcing Criteria, and the second one being a proposed Transition Plan that outlines how Puro.earth will manage the adoption of the newly refined methodology.

These updates come as a result of extensive field collaboration, in which Puro.earth partnered with a group of experts, consulted with relevant stakeholders, and conducted three workshops, collecting contributions that helped shape the methodology development process.

The newly introduced changes expand and clarify the biochar certification requirements defined by Puro.earth back in 2019.

They incorporate new scientific discoveries related to biochar durability, along with valuable details and refinements derived from five years of experience in certifying biochar projects.

Specifically, the changes were made to make sure the Puro Biochar methodology aligns with the Puro.earth General Rules 4.1, as well as with the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) of the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM).

The updated methodology is now based on a biochar carbon removal durability of several centuries, labeled as CORC200+, which is a notable increase from the former removal guarantee of more than one century (CORC100+).

Other changes include new rules for biomass eligibility, on-site management, biochar production and facility design, monitoring practices, and rules for biochar usage.

The document also offers explicit definitions for mobile and stationary production facilities, as well as new rules of baseline, classifying biochar projects into three categories: new built, retrofit, and charcoal repurpose.

In regard to integrity and transparency, the updated methodology proposes changes to rules on additionality and calculating project emissions, introducing more rigorous documentation requirements for monitoring progress.

On Apr 16, 2025, Puro.earth is hosting a webinar for those interested in learning more about the public consultation process.
