Puro.earth Hits New Milestone, Issuing 1M Carbon Removal Certificates

New Puro.Earth Report Tracks The Rise Of Biochar As A Leading CDR Approach - Carbon Herald

Puro.earth announced that it has reached over one million carbon removal certificates issued, representing one million tonnes of verified carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

The platform shared that while it took almost five years to reach 500,000 issued CO2 removal certificates in Q1 of 2024, it took only one year to double this number, landing at 1 million in Q1 2025.

As the issuance is currently going strong and experiencing exponential growth, the platform is confident it will be able to match this breakthrough again by the end of H1 2026.

Puro.earth president Jan-Willem Bode stated, “Reaching one million of CO₂ removals is just the beginning—our goal is to continue to use our expertise and track record to deliver proven, scalable and high-quality carbon removal credits.”

He added, “The next million is already within reach, and we will continue to ensure that businesses worldwide have access to trusted, verifiable carbon removal credits at scale.”

Analyzing the accumulated data, Puro.earth shared that this milestone was reached via solutions focused on Geologically Stored Carbon (34.3% of issuances), like Direct Air Capture Carbon and Storage (DACCS) and Bio Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), as well as Biochar (34.1%).

Due to their high-impact, scalable performance, and measurable outcomes, these technologies have emerged as the most-preferred among buyers.

Geography-wise, the United States takes the lead, accounting for nearly half (45%) of the issued certificates. Following suit are Finland (9.87%), Bolivia (9.64%), and Brazil (9.15%), along with other notable markets like Austria, Norway, and the UK.

From the initial total of 1 million issuances, a little over half (52.13%) have already been retired, which means 576,5613 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide have been claimed for.

Puro.earth Vice Chairman Antti Vihavainen stated, “We want to thank the key players that have come together to build the CDR market with us: the courageous investors who ventured into the unknown, the pioneering entrepreneurs who chose innovation over business-as-usual, and the forward-thinking buyers whose commitments make everything move.”
