Puro.earth has announced the certification and issuance of CO2 Removal Certificates (CORCs) for a milestone bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) project at the VEAS wastewater treatment facility in Norway.

Developed by Inherit Carbon Solutions, the initiative represents the world’s first validated and verified project to capture biogenic CO2 from biogas production and permanently store it in geological formations. It also marks the first European BECCS certification issued under the Puro Standard.

Following third-party audit and verification under Puro.earth’s Geologically Stored Carbon methodology, more than 700 CORCs were issued in the public Puro Registry. The initial batch covers the project’s first four months of operation, from February through May 2026. Ongoing monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) will support regular credit issuances moving forward.

A Replicable Blueprint for Biogas Infrastructure

The project operates through a multi-partner value chain:

  • Biogas & Capture: Biogenic CO2 is generated as a natural byproduct during biogas production at VEAS – Norway’s largest wastewater treatment plant, serving over 800,000 residents in the Oslo region. HoopCO2, a subsidiary of VEAS, manages the on-site capture and liquefaction operations.
  • Transport & Permanent Storage: The liquefied CO2 is trucked to Northern Lights JV’s receiving terminal in Øygarden, west of Bergen. From there, it is piped offshore and permanently injected 8,500 feet beneath the North Sea seabed.

While Northern Lights has offered commercial offshore storage for fossil CO2 since mid-2025, this marks its first receipt of biogenic CO2. Under the agreement with Inherit, the facility will store up to 7,000 metric tons of biogenic CO2 annually from VEAS during the initial project phase.

Jan-Willem Bode, President of Puro.earth, noted that the project demonstrates what can be achieved when existing biogas facilities and specialized geological storage infrastructure are seamlessly connected.

“Working with Puro.earth through this certification has given us a clear and credible pathway to bring these credits to market,” said Kaja Voss, CEO of Inherit Carbon Solutions. “This project shows just how much potential there is across the biogas supply chain for capturing and permanently storing biogenic CO2.”
