This week, American company CarbonCapture officially launched operations at its Project Tamarack deployment at the Deep Sky Alpha facility in Alberta.

The launch comes shortly after the company moved the project from the originally intended location in the United States to the more climate tech-favorable landscape in Alberta, Canada.

Launched by CarbonCapture’s Canadian subsidiary True North Carbon, Project Tamarack represents the largest single direct air capture (DAC) technology deployment in Canada, working towards an annual capture capacity of 2,000 tonnes of CO2 once fully operational.

The project has been welcomed with open arms by the local authorities, with Alberta’s Premier Danielle Smith, Minister Devin Dreeshen, and Minister Rebecca Schulz joining the celebration of its official launch in Innisfail.

As the host facility for Tamarack, Deep Sky Alpha will cover the utilities, renewable power, project operations, and CO2 transport and sequestration support.

Powered entirely by solar energy, Tamarack will capture atmospheric CO2 emissions through direct air capture technology, and it will be deployed along with DAC systems from other developers that will be simultaneously tested and optimized at the Deep Sky Alpha site to unlock advancements in DAC carbon removal.

Through these Alberta-based operations, Project Tamarack is expected to generate carbon removal credits that will be made available to interested buyers on the voluntary carbon market.

To ensure the credits align with the highest quality and integrity standards out there, CarbonCapture has partnered with carbon removal registry Isometric, who will oversee the measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) of the project, making sure that every issued credit stands for a tonne of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere.

This launch of Project Tamarack in Alberta further solidifies this Canadian province’s leading position in the support and development of novel climate tech solutions.

Known for its climate-oriented administration and vast natural resources, this region is on the path of establishing itself as a global booming carbon removal hub.
