PLN Becomes First Indonesian Company In International Carbon Trading - Carbon Herald

State-owned utility PT PLN has made history as the first Indonesian company to participate in international carbon trading, a move welcomed by the President’s Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, Hashim Djojohadikusumo.

He described it as a “a very positive and significant step” that will attract foreign investment and enhance liquidity in Indonesia’s carbon market, according to the Indonesia Business Post on Monday.

Speaking at CNBC Indonesia’s ESG Sustainability Forum 2025, Hashim highlighted that this decision stemmed from collaboration among key government bodies, including the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Forestry, and the National Economic Council.

Previously, regulatory restrictions limited Indonesia’s ability to capitalize on its vast forestry resources and nature-based carbon solutions.

“By opening foreign carbon trading, the flow of foreign investment can revive the national carbon market without reducing domestic recording,” Hashim was quoted as saying.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating that “climate change is a global issue that requires a global solution.”

By engaging in international carbon trading, PLN and the government aim to take direct action against climate change while fostering green investment.

Beyond the carbon market, the utility also offsets emissions and facilitates trading through its PLN Climate Click platform.

Launched in 2023, the platform supports carbon exchange activities, reinforcing PLN’s role in advancing Indonesia’s climate agenda.
