Remove Carbon Today is betting that certified carbon removal, durable carbon removal and public registry proof can turn climate action into a consumer product rather than a corporate-only service. The Finland-based startup says it is the first platform focused exclusively on giving individuals access to verified, ex-post carbon removal credits that have already removed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere before purchase.

Launched in late 2025, the company says customers in seven countries have already removed 35 tons of CO2 through the platform. Buyers can purchase removals starting from one kilogram and receive proof of retirement in the Puro.earth registry within a month.

Founder Tiia Vihavainen said the idea emerged after years spent working in international development, where she saw climate change threatening long-term humanitarian and community projects.

“Whatever the plans were, or a lot of change and positive impact that we were able to make with the donors’ donations is at risk because the climate is changing and the environment is changing,” she said in an interview, adding that vulnerable families are often “the first to experience it and suffer from it.”

The company currently relies primarily on biochar projects because of their availability and scalability, though Vihavainen said Remove Carbon Today plans to broaden into additional carbon removal methods as supply increases and prices become more accessible.

Making Carbon Removal Personal

Unlike many consumer climate offerings that focus on offsets, emissions reductions or future carbon capture promises, Remove Carbon Today only sells removals that have already occurred and are designed to store carbon for at least 100 years.

“We want to make it easy, immediate and permanent,” Vihavainen said.

The platform offers products tied to everyday activities, including flights, coffee consumption, clothing purchases and driving distances. Vihavainen described the user experience as “5 clicks, 10 seconds” to remove emissions connected to daily life.

The startup is also exploring partnerships with influencers and regional carbon removal suppliers as it expands internationally. Vihavainen said the company hopes to eventually offer projects across multiple continents to make customers feel more connected to where removals take place.

“I have a very strong conviction that we should start treating CO2 as any other waste,” she said. “We cannot wait to take care of that unavoidable CO2 anymore because our nature has reached its limits and the climate can’t wait.”
