Climate tech innovator Phlair has signed an agreement with NorDAC Kollsnes AS—a subsidiary of Carbon Removal—to collaborate on a large-scale direct air capture (DAC) and geologic CO2 storage project in Norway.
Under the agreement, the two companies will join forces to construct a novel DAC+S plant in Øygarden, which will be strategically positioned next to the Northern Lights terminal, where captured CO2 gets processed and injected for underground storage.
In Phase 1 of operations, the plant is expected to be able to remove 60,000 tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide annually, working towards increasing this volume to 500,000 tonnes of CO2 removal per year once the facility reaches full-scale production in Phase 2 of its development.
Besides delivering climate-positive results, this deployment will also serve to demonstrate that DAC technology and the grid system can operate in sync with one another.
To that end, the project will be centered around Phlair’s load-flexible and cost-effective DAC systems, driven by an all-electric design that doesn’t rely on heating to extract CO2 from the air.
Phlair’s hydrogen-looping electrolyzer tech captures and releases carbon dioxide with the help of electrochemistry.
This sophisticated system can be powered by renewable energy, and it has the ability to adjust to power source oscillations, where it runs continuously during peak sun hours and stores the surplus capture and release liquid in water tanks, acting as a sort of battery that enables a next-gen DAC technology that isn’t as energy-intensive as conventional solutions.

Besides providing this novel DAC system, as part of the collaboration in Norway, Phlair will also be in charge of detailed engineering, tech installation, commissioning, and ongoing system support.
NorDAC, who will be the operator of this plant, will handle the project development, covering the remaining infrastructure needs.
The partnering companies have also announced that during the period of their contract, DAC project development company Carbon Removal will be Phlair’s exclusive DAC customer in Norway.
