From Orphan Wells To Industry Software: Well Done Foundation Broadens Its Reach

The Well Done Foundation is entering a new phase of growth that sharpens its focus on plugging orphaned oil and gas wells across the United States, while expanding the reach of its data and monitoring tools through a newly announced commercial partnership with Heath.

The Montana-based nonprofit has plugged more than 70 orphaned and abandoned wells nationwide and is now active across six states, including Montana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

After issuing a large number of carbon credits back in 2024 the organization is now prioritizing actions that go beyond emissions alone and is leaning into what it calls the ground game.

While methane remains a key focus due to its climate impact and measurability, site selection now accounts more for community safety, proximity to homes and waterways, and growing concern around volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

That approach increasingly brings VOCs such as benzene and toluene into focus, reflecting a broader shift toward health-based risk mitigation alongside climate considerations.

“We plug wells, and sometimes they generate carbon credits,” says founder and chairman Curtis Shuck. “Our organization is mission driven, it’s not money driven.”

From orphan wells fieldwork to software

Alongside its physical remediation work, Well Done Foundation has quietly developed Well Intel, a software platform designed to serve as a single source of truth for orphan wells data, methane measurements, and live monitoring feeds. The platform is now being commercialised through a strategic partnership with gas detection company Heath.

Developed over several years, Well Intel integrates data from multiple detection tools, including ground-based sensors and satellite alerts, into one system.

“This platform wasn’t built in a boardroom; it was built in the field, solving real problems for real communities,” adds Patrick Jacobs, Vice President of Sales at Heath.

Heath will lead commercial distribution of Well Intel across the US oil and gas sector, while Well Done Foundation continues to focus on plugging wells and measuring emissions.

The new tool will allow the foundation to extend its influence beyond individual projects, positioning it as both an operator and a standard-setter. And that ties in with Shuck’s focus on enabling others to act with clarity, credibility, and care.

“The mark of success is not how many wells we plug, but is how many people we inspire to take action,” he says.
