The European Carbon Removal Certification Framework is the first EU-wide voluntary framework that aims to provide unified guidance and reliably certify high-quality carbon removals.
The proposal for the framework was adopted by the European Commission in 2022 and is now under development and discussion. The voluntary carbon market is hindered by the lack of regulatory guidance on reporting, verifying, and certifying of carbon credits. A framework would bring higher transparency, ensure trust from stakeholders and the industry, and prevent greenwashing.
