Ocean Visions has introduced a new sector tool, called the Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Knowledge Platform, offering a comprehensive, centralized resource for exploring mCDR organizations, pathways, and field trials.

This free, openly accessible platform was designed to help researchers, innovators, funders, policymakers, journalists, and other stakeholders stay on top of the rapidly evolving field of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR).

Through it, users can discover sector trends and connectivity, unlocking valuable insights that contribute towards collaborations, research, and decision-making.

“As the mCDR field has grown, there are more actors, projects, data, and information. But until now, no central repository existed to make this ‘innovation ecosystem’ more visible and accessible,” said Ocean Visions CEO Brad Ack.

“This user-friendly platform provides a single portal with an integrated view of the mCDR landscape, making critical information more accessible and transparent for this dynamic field,” he added.

This launch builds on Ocean Vision’s previous work focused on developing a trusted knowledge infrastructure for the field of mCDR. The mCDR Knowledge Platform merges and replaces the organization’s mCDR Field Trial Database and mCDR Ecosystem Database, which were released in 2023 and 2024, respectively.

What the Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Knowledge Platform offers

The Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal Knowledge Platform features an interactive map that shows past and present mCDR field trials along with actor location. It also offers interactive and downloadable mCDR graphs and figures, and it provides access to a directory of nearly 300 actors and their connections in the mCDR space.

Its development was led by Ocean Visions Program Officer Amelia-Juliette Demery. Commenting on the milestone platform launch, she stated, “Marine carbon dioxide removal holds significant promise, so it’s important to understand who is doing what, where, when, and how.”

Demery continued, “The mCDR Knowledge Platform helps answer key questions about the field’s activity and enables more rigorous and responsible research and decision-making.”

Moving forward, Ocean Visions will update the platform as the ocean-based carbon removal field matures, ensuring it remains a trusted and valuable resource for the global mCDR community.

Users interested in providing feedback or suggesting edits on this resource can do so through the Knowledge Platform submission forms.
