1PointFive, a company specializing in carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration, revealed that Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), the Japanese shipping giant, has acquired an additional batch of carbon dioxide removal credits.
These credits will be generated via 1PointFive’s Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. The new agreement is founded on NYK’s goal to offset what it refers to as “residual operational emissions,” helping bolster its long-term decarbonization strategy.
Second NYK purchase from 1PointFive
This transaction is NYK’s second purchase of DAC-enabled credits from 1PointFive, signaling growing confidence in carbon removal as indispensable for industries where emissions are hard to eliminate fully. NYK estimates that international shipping produces about one billion tons of CO2 per year. If about 10% of those emissions remain even after efficiency upgrades and low-carbon fuels, they argue that roughly 100 million tons of CO2 must be removed annually via carbon removal technologies.
“Together with 1PointFive, we aim to contribute not only to the decarbonization of international shipping, but to decarbonization worldwide,” said Akira Kono, NYK’s Representative Director and Executive Vice-President. He emphasized that while NYK is investing in vessels with better fuel efficiency, switching to biofuels, and streamlining operations, some emissions will remain that “cannot be eliminated through operational or technological improvements alone,” necessitating carbon removal.
Anthony Cottone, President & GM of 1PointFive, added: “We’re excited to expand our partnership with NYK who has taken a leadership approach in decarbonization and to demonstrate how Direct Air Capture is uniquely positioned to deliver durable and verifiable carbon removal.”
NYK’s credits will come from STRATOS, 1PointFive’s first DAC facility in Texas, due to begin operations later in the year. 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental, draws on its decades of experience in carbon management and large environmental projects to scale its commercial DAC efforts.
Previous Transaction: Marine Fuel + DAC Credits via ENEOS
Before this recent deal, NYK in partnership with ENEOS entered into an agreement in December 2024 to purchase marine fuel bundled with CDR credits coming from the same STRATOS DAC facility. The deal runs for five years starting in 2028.
Under its terms, ENEOS will acquire CDR credits from STRATOS and supply those credits along with marine fuel to NYK. This earlier transaction illustrates NYK’s strategy of combining fuel supply with removal credits as it transitions toward greener operations and addresses residual emissions that can’t be fully eliminated through fuel switching, efficiency gains, or new vessel technologies.
NYK has been actively working with other companies in the DAC space. In May 2025 it inked a three-year deal with Climeworks who will provide carbon credits sourced from different CO2 removal technologies in what is the Swiss company’s “portfolio” approach.
