Japanese shipping company NYK has signed a portfolio carbon dioxide removal (CDR) purchase deal with decarbonization trailblazer Climeworks.
The two companies have inked a three-year deal, under which Climeworks will provide NYK with carbon credits sourced from different CO2 removal technologies.
For Climeworks, NYK will be one of the clients that will take advantage of the company’s Climeworks Solutions service, which offers high-quality, thoroughly vetted portfolios of carbon removal tailored specifically to each client’s needs.
The pioneering direct air capture (DAC) company rolled out this offering back in April 2024, expanding its climate-forward operations into sourcing and managing portfolios of nature-based and tech-powered climate solutions for companies interested in CDR.
As Climeworks explained at the launch of this service, besides DAC technology, each CDR portfolio offered by them also includes a mix of other approaches, such as biochar, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), afforestation/reforestation, and enhanced rock weathering (ERW).
In that sense, the portfolio put together for NYK will include biochar, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage, and enhanced rock weathering.
As one of the largest global companies active in the shipping industry—a sector known for its heavy environmental footprint—NYK is working on a sustainability strategy that will advance the company towards its goal of reaching net-zero by 2050.

To reach this target, NYK is focusing on reducing its CO2 emissions and maximizing its energy efficiency, looking to transition from conventional, coal-based fuels towards more climate-friendly alternatives.
At the beginning of 2025, the shipping company released a position paper, stating its intent to broaden its sustainability efforts by also investing in carbon dioxide removal.
The newly announced CDR deal with Climeworks confirms this intent, and NYK has clarified that the carbon credits obtained through this portfolio agreement will go towards addressing the company’s residual emissions, including the ones generated in Scope 1.
