A pilot project in Northern Germany is showing how roads could become tools in the fight against climate change. Novocarbo, a carbon removal technology company, has partnered with Hansa Asphalt to create an asphalt mix that stores carbon while also improving material performance, offering a glimpse into the future of climate-friendly infrastructure.
The trial, conducted at the Carbon Removal Park Baltic Sea in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, used asphalt infused with fine-grained biochar, a carbon-rich material made from plant waste.
Mixed into the top asphalt layer at a 3% ratio, the test applied about 7 metric tons of biochar.
Results are promising: the asphalt covered more area using the same volume, has the potential to replace some traditional fillers or bitumen, and stores about 75 kg of CO2 equivalent per ton — 17.5 tons in total across the test section.
The stored carbon has been verified and certified as Carbon Removal Credits, which can be sold to help other companies offset unavoidable emissions.
Additional lab tests and core samples are underway, with early indications showing improved durability, stability, and resistance to temperature changes. Biochar also appears to enhance the viscosity of asphalt binders, adding further performance benefits.

A commercial rollout is planned for fall 2025, and Novocarbo is expanding testing with new construction and research partners. The goal is to scale the solution across infrastructure sectors, starting with roads.
With the global asphalt market expected to top $370 billion by 2032 and mounting pressure to cut emissions, biochar-infused asphalt could offer a powerful pathway — especially as long as materials meet strict standards, such as limits on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Novocarbo ensures compliance through certified production and rigorous quality control.
By turning a traditional emissions source into a carbon sink, this project could help pave the way — literally — for more sustainable construction practices.
