Norway and the Netherlands have signed an agreement for establishing a transport corridor for hydrogen and CO2 to be used by Tata Steel Nederland.
Norwegian company Gen2 Energy will generate green hydrogen by using hydropower and transport it with midstream CO2 and hydrogen services company ECOLOG‘s ships. Once it arrives at the Port of Amsterdam it will be turned back into a gas and utilized as fuel by Tata Steel Nederland.
Carbon capture, storage and storage (CCS) will also be part of the agreement. Tata Steel will be deploying CCS to produce carbon neutral steel and signed an accompanying agreement with Horisont Energi and ECOLOG.
This time the direction would be from the Netherlands to Norway, where the greenhouse gas can be permanently stored in one of the fields being developed there.
In this form, the CO2 could be transported by ship to Horisont Energi’s import terminal in Norway, where it would be permanently stored in the proposed Gismarvik carbon storage hub located in southern Norway. Horisont have previously shared that the hub’s storage capacity could reach 24 million tons of CO2 per year.
The Netherlands also provided a royal seal of approval for the dual hydrogen/CO2 transportation agreement by King Willen-Alexander who was on a formal visit to Norway. He explored hydrogen production and carbon capture sites in a bid to bring more attention to decarbonization, as well as the partnership between the two countries.
