Nordbex and Aker Solutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand their collaboration and accelerate the rollout of bioenergy with carbon capture, utilization, and storage (Bio-CCUS) projects across Europe.
The partnership’s first milestone will be Nordbex 1, Sweden’s inaugural replicable Bio-CCUS plant, scheduled to begin operations in the SE4 electricity region by 2029.
The facility will convert forestry waste into electricity and district heat for local communities while capturing and storing carbon dioxide, positioning it as a model for scalable, climate-positive energy generation.
Under the agreement, Nordbex will lead as the project developer, while Aker Solutions will provide project management, owner’s engineering, and EPCm (engineering, procurement, and construction management) services.
From Engineering Study to Full-Scale Partnership
The collaboration between the two companies began in 2023, when Aker Solutions’ consultancy arm, Entr, conducted engineering studies for Nordbex 1 to assess the integration of standalone technologies. The new MoU formalizes and deepens this partnership, setting the stage for a broader portfolio of Bio-CCUS projects in Europe.
“This partnership reflects our shared ambition to deliver reliable, sustainable, and future-ready energy solutions,” said Henrik Inadomi, Executive Vice President of New Energies at Aker Solutions. “Nordbex’s vision of dispatchable, low-carbon power that actively removes CO2 aligns perfectly with our mission to accelerate the energy transition.”
The agreement also grants Aker Solutions exclusivity on Nordbex’s next two Bio-CCUS projects along with a first right of offer on additional facilities as Nordbex expands its footprint.

Carl Berglund, Co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Nordbex, emphasized that Bio-CCUS represents a proven yet under-deployed method of carbon removal.
“Nordbex’s unique business model of building plants that are replicable, bankable and optimized for high-quality carbon removal to ensure maximum climate impact,” he said.
Together, Nordbex and Aker Solutions aim to position Sweden, and Europe more broadly, at the forefront of carbon-negative energy innovation, showcasing how industrial collaboration can turn biogenic waste into clean power and durable carbon storage.
