Newlab New Orleans and JERA, Japan’s largest power producer, have formed a strategic partnership through JERA Ventures to advance and commercialize next-generation CO2 capture technologies for power generation.
The collaboration targets one of the power sector’s hardest decarbonization challenges: capturing CO2 from combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facilities, where low CO2 concentrations make conventional capture systems energy-intensive and costly.
With surging electricity demand from advanced manufacturing, data centers, and other energy-heavy industries along the Gulf Coast, the partners see an urgent need for reliable, low-carbon power to maintain industrial competitiveness while meeting emissions-reduction goals.
The initiative will focus on scaling technologies such as advanced solvents, solid sorbents, membranes, and hybrid systems, aiming to improve energy efficiency, durability, and cost-performance beyond legacy capture approaches.
Through Newlab’s public–private platform in Louisiana, startups will gain access to industrial environments and real flue-gas testing, helping bridge the gap from pilot validation to commercial deployment.

JERA’s engagement in Louisiana includes development of the world’s largest low-carbon ammonia facility, ownership in the 300-MW Oxbow Solar Farm, and upstream investments in the Haynesville shale basin, reinforcing the company’s broader strategy to deploy cutting-edge decarbonization technologies globally.
Newlab and JERA will now work with regional partners to identify CCGT facilities suitable for demonstration-scale projects, with the goal of de-risking first-of-a-kind carbon capture systems and scaling deployment across Louisiana and into other global power markets.
