A new report by the American Biochar Institute (ABI) points out that the economic value of the biochar industry in the United States grew to around $157 million in 2025.
Published as a follow-up to the 2023 Global Biochar Market Report, the publication notes the increase in comparison with the figure for 2023, which showed an estimated biochar industry economic value of $53.6 million.
This growth, the publication says, is driven by rapid biochar commercialization and capacity expansion in the United States.
Released as the most comprehensive self-reported industry snapshot available to date, the report was created by non-profit ABI, whose focus is developing end-use markets and standards for biochar in the United States.
The intention of this report is to benchmark the United States biochar industry as this domestic sector grows.
According to the report, the US is rapidly adopting biochar use in domains such as agriculture, water filtration, carbon sequestration, and other markets.
While agriculture is the largest market for biochar, water filtration, environmental remediation, CO2 sequestration are still appearing as growth sectors.
The expansion of biochar use is reflected in multiple state- and city-run biochar projects, including the City of Minneapolis and Hamilton County’s Great Parks and Cincinnati Parks.
Besides observing an upward trend in biochar use, the publication also identifies key obstacles to its further rapid growth and surfaced areas of progress so far.

This work aligns with ABI’s broader mission of advancing the production and use of biochar in industrial, agricultural, and infrastructure markets as a way to reduce biomass waste while developing an economic circularity that supports rural communities.
Looking ahead, ABI will work on addressing the biochar growth obstacles by increasing the awareness of this climate solution, building robust and durable market demand, and developing industry standards.
“This report really highlights the growth of the biochar sector in the United States,” said Myles Gray, executive director of ABI. “It also validates much of the work we do at the American Biochar Institute to increase general awareness of biochar, develop industry standards, and to grow the use of biochar in agricultural, industrial, and built environment markets.”
