New Puro.Earth Report Tracks The Rise Of Biochar As A Leading CDR Approach - Carbon Herald

Puro.earth has published a new report, outlining the growth of biochar into the leading carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method currently available on the market.

In it, Puro.earth analyzes data collected from its own platform and other market benchmarks timestamped before Jun 11, 2025, noting interesting tendencies in biochar’s trajectory from its market debut to its current dominance in durable CDR.

The analysis showed that in the assessed period, biochar emerges as the absolute leader in delivered volumes of durable carbon removal and in market maturity.

According to the report, biochar projects from the Puro.earth platform have delivered 43% of the durable CDR volumes by June 2025, and this market presence is also evidenced by the carbon removal certificates (CORCs) issued by Puro, which also stand at 43% of all biochar CDR deliveries to date.

This momentum has been unlocked through greater investments in biochar projects, paired with improved methodologies and an increase in project deployment.

The evident biochar market maturity is credited to the enhanced transparency in pricing, robust liquidity, and the growing role of intermediaries, where the analyzed data showed that 85% of CORCs were sold through intermediaries.

These positive trends help further boost the confidence of investors and buyers in biochar CDR.

When it comes to buyers, the data indicated that the demand for biochar is driven by a widening mix of purchasers from different industries and company types that operate across a wide range of geographies.

With this impressive operational track record and rigorous and transparent verification protocols, biochar CDR has managed to establish a market standard for durable CO2 removals, shaping the perceptions and expectations of investors and influencing decision-making around regulatory frameworks.

Currently, the biochar sector seems to be building on this traction, working on innovations in measurement, permanence, and sustainability.

The Puro.earth report points out that this sector’s growth is underpinned by stakeholders that have a strong focus on scientific rigor, fortifying biochar’s reputation as a CO2 removal method with high carbon accounting integrity.
