In a new carbon removal market snapshot, CDR.fyi sheds light on the demand structure in this sector and how the activity of Microsoft, the Frontier Coalition, and other buyers have helped shape the market to date.

The release of this publication comes at a time when Microsoft, positioned as the boldest carbon removals buyer on the market, might be halting its investments in carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions.

Analyzing data from reported transactions such as public announcements, submissions made through the CDR.fyi Portal, and integrations with ecosystem service providers, CDR.fyi paints a picture of the durable carbon removal buyer and supplier activity so far.

According to the publication, as of April 13, 2026, Microsoft accounts for 36,439,157 tonnes, or 78.5% of total disclosed durable CDR tonnes contracted, while Frontier-linked buyers account for 1,841,384 tonnes, or 4.0%. All other buyers account for 8,167,880 tonnes, or 17.5%.

The report highlights that 259 durable CDR suppliers have sold credits in the voluntary market to date, and of these, 39 suppliers have contracted with Microsoft, 38 with Frontier-linked buyers, and 195 with other buyers.

While Microsoft and Frontier take the lead in most contracted CDR tonnes, buyers outside these two companies account for 90% of delivered and 94% of retired tonnes to date.

When it comes to CDR volumes, Microsoft is the only buyer with disclosed purchase agreements totaling above 1 Mt, while other buyers not linked to Microsoft or Frontier account for most recorded deals below 100K tonnes.

Microsoft’s contracted portfolio of removals is concentrated in bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), which accounts for 76% of its disclosed durable CDR volume, followed by biomass geological sequestration at 13%, biochar at 7%, and direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) at 2%.

The contracted CDR volumes from buyers other than Microsoft and Frontier have been increasing every year since 2022, reaching 3.2M tonnes in 2025.
