New Appleyard Lees Report Hints Towards Bright Future For CCUS - Carbon Herald

The fourth edition of the Appleyard Lees ‘Inside Green Innovation: Progress Report’ dives into the increase in patent filings related to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS).

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), CCUS technologies are a crucial tools in the battle against climate change.

The global landscape of CCUS innovation is rapidly evolving. According to the report, patent filings related to CCUS technologies have reached unprecedented levels, driven by the increasing urgency to address climate change and supportive government policies.

The United States, despite a slower growth rate compared to other nations, remains a dominant force in CCUS innovation. Its established infrastructure, supportive policies like the 45Q tax credit, and recent legislative advancements, such as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, continue to fuel growth.

South Korea has emerged as a significant player, surpassing Europe in patent filings. Government initiatives and investments under the Carbon Neutrality Framework Act 2021 are driving this surge.

China, while primarily focused on domestic patent applications, is increasingly venturing into internationally relevant filings, signaling its intent to commercialize CCUS technologies globally.

Direct Air Capture: A Promising Avenue

Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology offers a unique approach to carbon removal by directly capturing CO2 from the atmosphere. While this technology faces challenges, particularly in terms of energy efficiency, it holds immense potential as a carbon-negative solution.

The report shows global patent filings related to DAC have reached a new high, with Climeworks consistently leading in this field. However, the limited number of large-scale DAC plants highlights the need for scalable and efficient technologies.

Government policies play a pivotal role in driving CCUS innovation. The European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation proposal and the US Clean Fuels & Products Shot initiative are examples of policies that incentivize the development of low-carbon fuels and materials.

To fully realize the potential of CCUS, the integration of low-carbon energy sources is crucial. This will enable the efficient capture, storage, and utilization of CO2, ultimately leading to a more sustainable future.

As we navigate the challenges of climate change, CCUS technologies offer a promising pathway towards a greener and more sustainable world. Continued innovation, supportive policies, and international collaboration will be essential to unlock the full potential of this transformative technology.
