Shopify made another step towards enhancing its sustainability practices. The company launched a new app called Planet that offers merchants carbon-neutral shipping for a fee of between $0.035 and $0.15 per order.
According to Shopify, one of the most impactful changes that a business owner can make is to their shipping. Planet makes it easy for entrepreneurs to remove estimated carbon emissions from order shipments while providing crucial peace of mind to sustainability-focused customers.

“Planet empowers Shopify merchants to join the fight against climate change in such a meaningful way… With Planet, Shopify businesses can use carbon-neutral shipping to connect with customers while supporting the most innovative climate solutions on Earth,” said Stacy Kauk, Shopify’s Head of Sustainability.
What sets Planet apart from other sustainability apps is that it focuses on carbon removal and does not offer carbon offsetting via forest protection projects for example. It leverages Shopify’s works with high-impact companies like Running Tide and Remora that plan to make tangible reductions on Earth’s emissions levels via their innovation.

Merchants can use the Planet app by installing it from the Shopify app store. After that, they need to choose a plan from their shop’s dashboard. The plans are Decade, Century, and Millennium and they offer different levels of carbon removal with their fees ranging from $0.035 to $0.15 per order.
“It took maybe a half a second of consideration before we chose the full 1,000-year plan,” said Rennie Wood, a Shopify client regarding the new Planet app.
Taking care of the sustainability of the planet is no longer a luxury but rather a necessity. Minimizing the environmental footprint of our economy is a ticket towards healthy and productive living which is something that concerns human beings on Earth themselves.
