AI is revolutionizing the way we approach carbon capture technology, with new breakthroughs boosting efficiency and driving down costs. 

A recently launched project, valued at millions of pounds and spearheaded by Heriot-Watt University‘s international research center for achieving net zero, is harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to significantly reduce the time and expenses associated with simulating carbon capture and storage methods. 

Dubbed ECO-AI, a team of innovative researchers has developed advanced algorithms that are specifically designed for scientific calculations, material identification, and financial predictions.

Supported by a £2.5 million (~$3.15 million) grant from UK Research and Innovation, the ECO-AI initiative is focused on creating environmentally-friendly solvents for capturing CO2 and then storing it permanently in underground geological formations using a range of artificial intelligence methods.

These AI tools play a critical role in streamlining the process of capturing and storing CO2 underground, ultimately helping companies and policymakers make informed decisions regarding the implementation of carbon capture solutions.

Heriot-Watt University’s global research institute is currently working on a project called iNetZ+, which aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions and more. The team includes experts in various fields such as chemical engineering, physics, geology, mathematics, computer science, and economics.

Utilizing advanced AI simulators, the team is able to replace traditional methods for modeling flow migrations. This has significantly reduced the time needed for simulations on a supercomputer, where tasks that previously took up to 100 days can now be completed in just 24 hours.
