The voluntary carbon market (VCM) experienced a significant surge in November, driven by heightened trading of nature-based credits on Xpansiv’s CBL exchange. Trading volumes nearly doubled month-over-month, underscoring a growing preference for high-quality, nature-driven carbon offsets.
Xpansiv, a leader in environmental commodities and registry services, reported over 600,000 tons of over-the-counter block trades under its N-GEO and N-GEO Trailing Vintage contracts, with prices ranging from $0.30 to $4.10 per metric ton.
The market’s seasonal uptick mirrors patterns from the previous year, where November accounted for 8% of annual activity. By mid-December 2024, more than 2 million tons of carbon credits had already been traded, comprising 16% of the year’s transactions.
If this trajectory continues, December’s trading levels could rival last year’s record, when 31% of the year’s volume was processed.

In November, Xpansiv introduced carbon removal credits as a distinct market category, allowing traders greater transparency and flexibility. Early adoption has been promising, with Anew notably contributed 75,000 U.S. forestry removal credits, highlighting robust support for this innovation.
Nature-based credits dominated activity, particularly Asian reforestation projects. Over 60,000 recent vintage credits were traded at prices ranging from $25.00 to $42.00.
The volume-weighted average price (VWAP) for Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) credits rose from $3.76 in October to $9.54 in November, reflecting increased demand for sustainable, nature-driven solutions.
Conversely, credits from other sectors, such as energy and industrial waste, saw significant price declines, suggesting a market shift toward higher-quality options.
CBL’s standardized GEO contracts experienced mixed results, with the VWAP for N-GEO block trades dropping from $18.10 in October to $0.77 in November.
This decline reflects the types of AFOLU credits traded, with project-specific credits commanding premiums due to unique attributes and localized benefits. For instance, the highest-priced AFOLU credit in November reached $42.00, compared to $27.50 in October.
The VCM demonstrates resilience and maturity, prioritizing impactful projects that align with global climate goals. The market’s evolution underscores a growing emphasis on quality, particularly in nature-based and removal segments.
Xpansiv’s innovations, such as enhanced portfolio management tools and distinct carbon removal trading, are well-positioned to meet the rising demand for transparency and efficiency.
