Membrane Technology & Research (MTR) has raised $27 million in fresh funding led by Climate Investment, marking a new phase of expansion for the long-standing industrial separation technology company as it also installs new leadership.

The California-based firm said the Series B round will support efforts to scale its membrane systems across industries ranging from natural gas processing to hydrogen production and carbon capture. Hartree Partners joined the round, underscoring investor appetite for technologies that promise lower-cost emissions reductions in heavy industry.

Alongside the capital raise, the company appointed John Gatlin as chief executive, signaling a push toward commercialization and global growth. Gatlin said, “MTR has a peerless reputation for quality, performance, and innovation. This investment enables us to scale up our manufacturing and service delivery capabilities in order to provide high performance, cost-effective gas separation and carbon capture solutions to more customers throughout the world.”

MTR focused on energy efficiency

Founded in 1982, MTR has deployed hundreds of systems worldwide and built a large patent portfolio in membrane-based gas separation. Its technology offers an alternative to conventional processes that are often more energy-intensive, positioning the company within a growing market for efficiency-driven decarbonization tools.

Investors are increasingly targeting such solutions as industries face pressure to cut emissions without disrupting operations. Patrick Yip of Climate Investment said, “Membrane technologies offer a highly energy-efficient and compelling cost-effective industrial gas separation alternative to conventional gas separation methods.”

George Potts of Hartree added that the firm sees strong potential in scaling next-generation systems for a global customer base.

The deal reflects broader momentum in industrial climate technologies, where investors are prioritizing scalable solutions that can be deployed quickly across existing infrastructure, particularly in sectors such as refining, chemicals and energy.
