The South West of England is an important centre for key industries such as power, waste, cement, advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and defence, with businesses in and around the region emitting over 8 million tons of carbon dioxide a year.

7CO2 is an independent carbon capture and transport hub at The Port of Bristol, established to enable the capture and storage of emitters’ CO2 for onward transport to geological storage. Successful decarbonisation of the region will be reliant on Non Pipeline Transport of CO2, by rail or pipeline to 7CO2, and then onward shipping to long-term geological storage, as well as close cooperation with regional emitters and wider green energy investors.

As a result, today, key regional partners, including major energy-from-waste and power generators, the hub and port, shipping and CO2 store companies have signed an MOU to cooperate to further develop the technical and commercial feasibility of the 7CO2 hub and Non Pipeline Transport – with onward shipping to geological storage, including into the Acorn CO2 store.

The signatories to the MOU are:

  • 7CO2
  • The Bristol Port Company

Development of the 7CO2 hub and successful implementation of Non Pipeline Transport will allow decarbonisation of the region, both preserving and creating local jobs, enabling inward investment, and enabling opportunities for growth in green industries such as the production of efuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuel. With clear Government support for Non Pipeline Transport, many of our projects could capture CO2 by 2030, contributing significantly to Government targets and improving the value for money of Government’s support for CO2 stores such as Acorn.

The MOU partners welcome discussion with further emitters and supply chain partners as we develop our proposals. We anticipate working closely with Government to accelerate Non Pipeline Transport projects and stores, in line with the UK’s ambitious net zero, carbon capture, and clean power goals.

Paul Davies, Director of 7CO2, said, “Carbon Capture offers the opportunity for businesses across the UK to decarbonise if we invest in the infrastructure to transport CO2 to geological storage. This MOU between partners all the way through the value chain shows our commitment to develop Non Pipeline Transport of CO2 at pace, both technically and commercially, ready for the first projects to start operations as soon as possible and in line with Government’s ambitions.”
