Tokyo-based MODEC and Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) have received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for their Blue Ammonia Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit.

This innovative facility will produce ammonia using gas from a nearby oil and gas FPSO while integrating Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to minimize emissions.

The Blue Ammonia FPSO is designed to utilize associated gas, which has traditionally been reinjected into reservoirs.

By converting this gas into ammonia, the FPSO offers a sustainable alternative while capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from both the production process and gas turbine generators.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding collaborated on developing the hull for ammonia storage and offtake.

This initiative marks the first “Concept Design of Floating Alternative Energy Production Facility” under MODEC’s mid-term business plan for 2024–2026, titled “Explore a Sustainable Future with Innovation.”

The concept leverages MODEC’s expertise in FPSO hull design, mooring technology, and overall layout, combined with TOYO’s proficiency in ammonia production and equipment design.

The resulting blue ammonia is expected to play a key role in the energy transition as an alternative fuel and hydrogen carrier.

MODEC views this AiP as a crucial step toward commercializing floating alternative energy solutions.

“We will contribute to the minimization of CO2 emissions from FPSOs and the decarbonization of the global energy supply chain through developing new technologies for a sustainable future,” the company stated.

Moving forward, MODEC and TOYO will refine the concept to address commercialization challenges, aiming to provide a safe, cost-effective, and low-carbon energy solution.
