Japanese transport giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has partnered with Isometric, signing a strategic partnership on carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

As part of this cooperation, Isometric will issue scientifically rigorous, high-integrity carbon removal credits to support MOL’s strategy for reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The carbon removal credits will be certified under the Isometric Standard.

This joint effort builds on MOL’s previous collaboration with Isometric, which was selected as the registry to track the 10,000-tonne enhanced weathering offtake agreement between MOL and Alt Carbon, announced earlier this year.

In a statement, Daisuke Fujihashi, General Manager of the Carbon Solution Development Unit at MOL, explained that high-quality CDR credits are a key part of MOL’s strategy for addressing residual emissions on the path to net-zero.

“We are pleased to partner with Isometric to achieve this, underpinned by their rigorous and transparent approach to verification,” he added.

On behalf of Isometric, CEO Eamon Jubbawy commented, “This partnership underscores both the growing demand for transparent, scientifically rigorous carbon removal and Isometric’s position as the registry of choice in the Japanese market. MOL is setting the pace for decarbonization strategies in the shipping sector, and we look forward to supporting them on their journey to net-zero emissions.”

Isometric has successfully positioned itself as one of the leading standards and registries on the voluntary carbon market. Its protocols, which provide requirements and procedures for suppliers to generate high-quality CDR credits, currently cover 17 different CO2 removal technologies, including enhanced weathering, ocean alkalinity enhancement, biochar, and reforestation.

To date, Isometric has also managed to secure ICVCM approval for six of its protocols, which can now issue credits with the Core Carbon Principles (CCP) label, a benchmark for quality in carbon markets.

In March 2025, the registry launched Certify—a tech-powered CDR verification platform that reduced the conventionally year-long process of credit issuance down to the impressive monthly timeframe, enabling CDR developers to access the regular revenue needed for scaling.
