Climate impact catalyzer Milkywire has announced that it is exploring the possibility of procuring large-scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from projects integrated within data center infrastructure.
The announcement clarifies that the procurement would be particularly focused on solutions whose data center integration enables a clear technical or economic advantage for durable CDR.
Such advantages include the use of waste heat, shared energy systems, CO2 infrastructure or other forms of physical integration.
Milkywire is interested in initiatives whose primary focus is carbon removal. To choose the best-suited solutions for this potential procurement, its team has put together a short form through which interested parties can submit their initial proposals.
This call comes at a time of dynamic data center development, accompanied by sustainability concerns, as these ambitious megastructures come with a high consumption of resources such as electricity and water, among others.
Milkywire’s criteria for CDR projects
Besides being primarily focused on CDR, projects must also follow a set of other criteria to qualify for this potential procurement opportunity.
In that regard, Milkywire highlights that the solutions need to be integrated into the data center value chain, and the integration must unlock real technical, economic, or market benefits for the removal project.
As qualifying forms of integrations, the call lists solutions using data center waste heat to power the capture or sorbent regeneration process, directly or upgraded by heat pumps, as well as CDR facilities sharing a site, energy system, or other infrastructure with a data center under a common development agreement.

Additionally, the call will consider carbon removal facilities supplying firm power to a data center from the same facility through a physical arrangement and direct air capture installations sharing on-site CO2 compression, transport, or storage infrastructure with a point-source capture system on the host’s energy generation site.
The announcement underlines that eligible applicants need to have closed at least one prior commercial CDR agreement to qualify for this opportunity.
