In a new pre-purchasing round supported by Salesforce, Milkywire has finalized agreements with eight different durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) suppliers for over 3,600 tonnes.

The round is part of Salesforce’s pledge to contract $100 million in durable CDR by 2030, and it follows the Salesforce-backed purchases from 19 suppliers announced back in January.

This time, the investment is in companies working on carbon removal through direct air capture (DAC), biomass storage, and ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE).

For the developers, the investment provides funding at a critical time when the buyer has the power to fuel the growth of the CDR approach. The selected suppliers are currently working on first-of-a-kind deployments, exploring geographies and technical steps that the rest of the field can learn from.

The companies selected for the pre-purchases include Alkamy Carbon (667 tonnes), Brineworks (500 tonnes), Carba (816 tonnes), Cowboy Clean Fuels (500 tonnes), Deep Sky (394 tonnes), PRONOE (131 tonnes), Sirona Technologies (390 tonnes), and Yama (263 tonnes), bringing the total to 3,661 tonnes of durable CDR.

Specialized in direct air capture, Sirona Technologies, Yama, Brineworks, and Deep Sky all currently have operations in different development stages.

Sirona Technologies will build the world’s first heat pump integration on a commercial DAC project, performing an energy efficiency test expected to generate valuable sector insights.

Yama is behind France’s first operating DAC pilot, and the company is now building a 365 t/yr demonstration facility, while Brineworks is combining electrochemical DAC with green hydrogen co-production in the Netherlands, and Deep Sky is developing a DAC-with-mineralization project in Canada.

From the OAE front, the two companies that have secured pre-purchases in this round are PRONOE and Alkamy Carbon. On its end, PRONOE is running the EU’s first land-based OAE system integrated with an industrial desalination plant, while Alkamy Carbon has OAE operations in existing wastewater treatment infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, contributing towards the first wastewater alkalinity dataset from tropical conditions.

Lastly, the two selected biomass storage suppliers are Carba, which converts waste biomass to stable biocarbon and buries it in landfills, and Cowboy Clean Fuels, which injects agricultural processing residues into unmineable coal seams, where native subsurface microbes turn the biomass material into carbon dioxide that permanently binds to the coal.
