Microsoft has signed a carbon removal agreement with InPlanet, investing in enhanced rock weathering (ERW) credits to be delivered between 2026 and 2028.
Under the agreement, InPlanet will remove more than 28,500 tonnes of CO2 through its ERW operations in Brazil.
This South American country is home to InPlanet’s ERW program, positioned on a territory of more than 12,000 hectares of farmland.
The farms included in the project are treated with finely crushed silicate rock that gets spread on soil to catalyze a process that removes atmospheric CO2 emissions and improves the soil’s health and climate resilience.
As a country that is largely tropical, Brazil offers favorable conditions for ERW deployment that accelerate the weathering of the silicate rock material, enhancing the environmental impact of this pathway and presenting an opportunity for its large-scale growth.
Acknowledging these advantages, InPlanet has developed ERW projects in Brazil that have shown measurable improvements for agriculture and climate over the past 24 months.
The company is also committed to researching the field of ERW, and Founder and CEO Felix Harteneck shared that through this agreement with Microsoft, InPlanet will be able to deepen its scientific research and further validate this approach under real-world conditions.
He commented, “Our team is monitoring every aspect, from soil chemistry to local water systems, to ensure each tonne of CO₂ is rigorously accounted for. The insights we gain from these deployments will improve our measurement and verification methods, setting an even higher bar for transparency in carbon removal.”

In the beginning of 2025, InPlanet made history by becoming the company with the world’s first independently verified ERW credits, which were verified by Isometric at that time. The credits for the deal with Microsoft will also be issued under Isometric’s Enhanced Weathering Protocol and publicly listed on the Isometric Registry.
To support transparency and scientific knowledge-sharing in this field, InPlanet will release anonymized project data through Cascade Climate’s ERW Data Quarry.
Harteneck stated, “Ultimately, this is about building trust: we want every stakeholder to know that each credit we deliver is grounded in solid science and delivers permanent climate benefits.”
