Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Hokuetsu Corporation, a leading Japanese paper manufacturer, have initiated a demonstration test for CO2 capture at Hokuetsu‘s Niigata Mill. 

This project aims to capture CO2 emissions from a chemical recovery boiler, a critical component of paper production that generates steam and electricity. The test utilizes MHI‘s “CO2MPACT™ Mobile,” a compact and transportable CO2 capture system. 

This marks the first application of MHI’s CO2 capture technology within the pulp and paper industry. The collected data will be crucial for evaluating commercial applications and accelerating decarbonization efforts within this sector.

Chemical recovery boilers rely on “black liquor,” a byproduct of the pulp production process, as their primary fuel source. In pulp production, wood chips are dissolved in a sodium-containing solvent known as “white liquor” to extract the pulp. 

Subsequently, the white liquor component is recovered from the remaining black liquor residue after combustion and recycled for reuse.

With the global emphasis on decarbonization, Japan is actively pursuing decarbonization strategies across various industrial sectors, including the pulp and paper industry.

This demonstration test is anticipated to provide the industry with a valuable solution that directly addresses CO2 emissions during production, thereby contributing to global environmental initiatives.
