Montreal-based company CarbiCrete announced a carbon financing collaboration with Meta that will enable the advancement of its low-carbon concrete production technology.

Under the collaboration, CarbiCrete will expand its current capacity at Patio Drummond in Quebec, a site where the technology is being deployed commercially.

Additionally, the Canadian company will leverage this partnership to install its innovative cement-free concrete production equipment at Canal Block, a block maker in Ontario.

CarbiCrete has developed a patented technology that enables the production of a novel, cement-free concrete made with a by-product obtained during the process of steel-making.

The slag generated in steel factories successfully replaces cement as a binding ingredient in the concrete manufacturing process.

This product not only avoids cement-related emissions, but it also removes atmospheric carbon dioxide by mineralizing CO2 into the concrete for permanent storage.

To quantify and verify the carbon removal achieved through this decarbonized concrete, CarbiCrete employs the services of its long-term partner 3Degrees, a leading climate solutions developer with a global network of operations.

In a statement, Jacob Homiller, CEO of CarbiCrete, called the recent carbon financing collaboration with Meta a win-win scenario, explaining that the accelerated adoption of their technology will have an immediate impact, reducing emissions in the concrete value chain and providing cement-free concrete materials to the construction industry.

“We are thrilled to be working alongside Meta and 3Degrees to decarbonize this hard-to-abate industry,” he added.

On behalf of Meta, Devon Lake, head of net zero strategy, shared that the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors like concrete is an important focus in the company’s climate strategy that aims to achieve net zero across its value chain in 2030.

Lake goes on to add, “Collaborating with organizations like CarbiCrete, who have meaningfully made progress in this sector, is instrumental to accelerate the implementation of this technology and drive results.”
