Messer Group has started sourcing CO2 from a bioethanol producer close to its Vrdy plant in the Czech Republic. The carbon capture from the fuel production will serve as a reliable supply for food and beverage producers in the area and essentially providing a circular utilization cycle for CO2.
The business model should reduce the need to source the gas from multiple suppliers across the country or to even import during peak periods. The company points out that demand for carbon dioxide jumps during the summer when carbonated drinks and cooling require larger volumes of the gas.
The move will also mean that the transportation costs will also be reduced, with the points of capture and utilization being closer to each other.
Messer building carbon capture and utilization capacity
The German industrial gas producer has been working on developing its CO2 vertical in recent years and has engaged in multiple capture and utilization projects while also offering carbon dioxide in bottles for a variety of needs, as well as for dry ice applications.
It has also been partnering with BASF for the deployment of the OASE® blue technology to recover CO2 from flue gas.
In April 2024 the company also unveiled a service called ZeCarb which is designed to encompass the complete CCUS value chain in one place.
