A group of Wyoming ranchers in Laramie County has initiated a groundbreaking venture, Meriden Carbon, combining land ownership with energy expertise.

This innovative approach sets it apart from traditional energy projects in the state. By prioritizing local landowners, Meriden Carbon empowers them with ownership stakes and decision-making authority regarding land development and capitalizing on future carbon storage demands.

Recognizing the global shortage of carbon storage options, the landowner group formed Meriden Carbon in early 2023 and launched the Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub project.

This ambitious endeavor aims to become one of the largest carbon storage projects in the United States, leveraging over 100,000 contiguous acres of land.

Local rancher Jon Kirkbride highlighted the project’s impact on his family’s legacy and the community’s future. The Steamboat project embodies Wyoming’s pioneering spirit, combining hard work and determination to build a sustainable future.

The project’s self-funded efforts have garnered significant attention, leading to recent support from the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM).

The $9 million CarbonSAFE Phase II cooperative agreement will enable Meriden Carbon to collaborate with esteemed institutions like the University of Wyoming, Energy & Environmental Research Center, Payne Institute for Public Policy, and Advanced Resources International to validate the project’s substantial carbon storage potential.

Jeff Kummer, founder, and CEO of Meriden Carbon, expressed enthusiasm for the Steamboat Carbon Storage Hub’s potential to position Wyoming as a leader in addressing global energy challenges.

“It has been one of the highlights of my career to establish this company in direct partnership with legacy ranching families of southeast Wyoming – this opportunity is special, and I am grateful for it,” Kummer said.
