Showcasing the power of AI and Large Language Models in climate tech, Maya Climate is sharing an exhaustive set of data for nature-based carbon projects for free.

CEO Till Torniepoth shared his thoughts on some of the main issues holding back the development of the voluntary carbon markets and part of the motivation behind making the database freely available: “Integrity concerns are holding back investment in projects. We need the maximum amount of transparency on project data to recover trust. This started with making all project boundaries available on registries to more qualitative criteria, such as publishing revenue-sharing agreements. Finally, we need to continue advancing the quality of geospatial datasets, so we can enable more objective MRV soon.”

The first step in creating the resource was made by Elias Ayrey and his colleagues at Renoster who open-sourced shapefiles for the carbon projects are incuded in platforms like Verra, Gold Standard, ACR, CAR and Ecoregistry, buiding the foundation for the version Maya has released.

The database has geospatial data analysis reports on an exhaustive number of variables for the 500 projects, including:

– Forest Cover Changes
– Land Use Land Cover Changes
– Above-Ground Biomass
– Terrain
– Burned Area
– Drought Risk
– Hydrological Conditions
– Surface Water Changes

Torniepoth also shared his thoughts on the role of AI in carbon markets by saying: “The combination of geospatial process automation and LLMs will massively drive the adoption of geospatial tools and data in business decision-making. The AI-generated texts make the analysis results more accessible to non-technical users. We are seeing very promising data on our platform on the interaction with AI-generated texts. We believe the new generation of geospatial tools will be text-based not based-based and we’re proud to lead that generation.”

The report is available upon request in the LinkedIn post, with over 1,000 comments stating their interest at the time of writing.
